I’m not going to lie, body image has been on my brain lately. Not only have swimsuit ads been popping up every which way, but I’m now less than 5 months out from my wedding and a beach honeymoon… and frankly, it’s hard to recenter sometimes to think about what truly matters, which is how I feel, my energy levels, whether or not I’m enjoying my food, and frankly, not worrying about looks. In case you’re feeling the same struggle, here’s 6 helpful books, blogs, and podcasts I turn to not only in times like this, but for some everyday positivity!
Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole, MS RD and Elyse Resch, MS RD FADA CEDRD
This book is the gold standard of body positivity, food peace, and, well, intuitive eating. I’ve read it multiple times now and I learn something new every time. It has some amazing insight on breaking free of the diet mindset, with support from scientific studies and of course stories of people’s journeys to intuitive eating. AND there’s a new workbook by the same authors coming out this week to help actively guide you through the process of trusting your body and eating intuitively. I’m so excited to get mine in the mail!
Body Respect by Linda Bacon, PhD and Lucy Amphramor, PhD, RD
I’m well into this book right now and loving the perspective it brings to the weight conversation. It also has insight as to how social factors can affect not only body image, but even metabolism, plus it openly addresses body shame in a very honest way.
The Real Life RD Blog by Robyn Coale, RD, FNP
This blog was one of the first places I discovered that I wasn’t alone in my exhaustion with the world’s demands of what I should look like or eat. Robyn has a knack for creating posts that are body positive, explain all the ways that health can look, and has the kind of tone that makes you feel like you’re chatting with a friend over coffee. She’s also an RD turned Nurse Practitioner, meaning she’s got crazy-knowledge from all areas and backs her facts. Cannot recommend this one enough. Favorite posts here and here.
Yeah….ImmaEatThat Blog by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD, LD
Much like the Real Life RD, Kylie focuses on the way life feels and not how it looks. The insight is unreal and the recipes are delicious over on this blog. She’s honest, she’s real, she’s funny, and she’s got tons of knowledge. She also is honest and forthcoming about her eating disorder and how she overcame it, giving a ton of relatability to her writing. Favorite posts here and here.
Food Psych Podcast with Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN
Literally every episode of this podcast has me saying “YASSSSS” out loud in agreement. Christy brought to my eyes the idea that when it comes to body image, you can’t hate the player (aka yourself and others) – but you can hate the game (aka the media, shame, etc). This was one of those phrases that I had been ruminating on for a while, but Christy put it into simple language and articulated it exactly right. Current favorite episode: #96 – The Truth About Dieting and why we need to #ChangeTheGame (feat. Rebecca Scritchfield and Julie Duffy Dillon).
Dietitians Unplugged Podcast with Aaron Flores, RDN and Glenys Oyston, RDN
What’s not to love in a podcast by RDN’s about intuitive eating? Literally nothing, let me tell ya. This podcast has great guest features and tackles current topics like Oprah’s partnership with Weight Watchers that helps the listener really evaluate the world with a critical eye. Favorite episode: #11 – Tips for Living a Non Diet Life.
So, there ya have it. Some body happiness to kick your week off with a fresh start and good feels. Happy Monday!
